Many large companies are going solar as energy costs keep rising.

With the increasingly valuable solar panel incentives, it’s no surprise that many of the world’s most successful companies have turned toward solar energy as a viable energy source. In fact, a 2015 study by the Solar Energy Industries Association indicates that the previous four years had seen a 183 percent jump in solar energy adoption by U.S. businesses. Many homeowners are doing the same, making solar energy work for them instead of allowing it to go to waste. The cost savings can be tremendous, especially if a home or business receives a lot of sun, and the panels are designed and placed for maximum efficiency.

Top companies such as Walmart and Apple are a big reason why commercial solar installations were up 59 percent in 2015, as compared with 2014. They are among five billion-dollar companies that took advantage of solar panel incentives and went solar.

1. Kohl’s

Kohl’s receives 100 percent of its energy from renewables, and solar panels on top of stores contribute as much as half of a store’s energy.

2. IKEA

Not only does IKEA love solar energy for its own stores, it’s expanding its low-cost solar offerings to consumers in multiple countries.

3. Apple

In February 2015, Apple signed a huge deal with the largest U.S. developer of solar farms; the agreement lets Apple benefit from a 30 percent tax credit and ensures electricity for Apple stores in California, as well as offices, headquarters and more.

4. Walmart

Walmart is taking advantage of a Department of Energy initiative to decrease its energy consumption, and the company plans to double its solar energy programs in Puerto Rico and the United States by 2020.

5. Costco

Costco is affiliated with Sunrun, a solar energy company, but that’s not all: At least 33 of its warehouses use solar systems, and customers can buy home solar panel kits from Costco.
